There is a reward system in which users acquire "lingots", an in-game currency that can be spent on features such as character customizations or bonus levels. There are public leaderboards in which people can compete against their friends or see how they stack up against the rest of the world. The level system that Duolingo use is experience points, a numerical system that represents a user's skill level. Badges in Duolingo represent achievements that are earned from completing specific objectives or challenges.

The most remarkable thing about Duolingo is it does not cost anything. It is free to download and according to its founder, it will be free forever. In order to learn a language usually requires money and you need to attend a class or a good school that has foreign language department or subject. But with this app, people around the world can master another language for free.

Teachers can also create assignments and keep track of who is completing them and who needs a nudge. Assignments can be skill or point based. Plus, teachers can assess student progress through this app. Measure student achievement and dedication. Duolingo provides data such as points earned, assignments completed, course tree review and streak days. All teachers need to do is choose the metric that matches their needs.
  • Benefits of Duolingo in learning.
Duolingo is a good app to get into a language. Students can catch up basic phrases and listen to some other language. The point and skill level can keep them up for some time and motivate them to improve their knowledge. With Duolingo, students can learn a new language other than BM and English and polish their soft skills for working purposes. Bilingualism provides benefits beyond the ability to ask for directions or to order a coffee without accidentally receiving a large dessert platter. The brains of polyglots operate differently that those unilingual folks. Regular use of the third language sharpens many cognitive skills and it is even been found to make you appear more attractive.
  • Guidelines on getting started with Duolingo.
Duolingo is a great example of a straightforward language app. It is really simple to use. Users need to set up a profile, choose their target language based on their preferences, set their weekly goals and off you go!

Each course in Duolingo is made up of modules which are grouped to form skills.

Duolingo dictates the order in which users need to complete the different modules, with new modules becoming active only once you have completed the previous one. In other words, you need to complete lesson 1 to be able to progress to lesson 2, and so on. Duolingo allows you to 'test out of' individual modules as well as groups of modules (skills).

Pressing the 'test out' button let users take a shortcut if they want to avoid taking the individual lessons or modules.
