learning tool 1 : Prezi

  • The description of Prezi.
Prezi is a web-based tool for creating presentations which is similar to other presentation software that students always use. For example, Microsoft PowerPoint. The difference between Prezi and other presentation software is that Prezi offers some unique features that make it a good alternative for students or even businesses to do presentation as it has become very popular in recent years. Prezi is suitable for those who want to create a presentation that is a bit more eye-catching and engaging to the audiences.

Most types of presentation software use a slide-based approach, where we can move back and forth between the slides, like pages in a book. This is where Prezi is a bit distinct compared to other presentation software. Prezi uses a canvas-based approach. It has one large canvas that the presentation moves around on, zooming in and out to view various frames. Canvas-based approach is much more easier to describe with a visual aid.

  • Features of Prezi.
There are a lot of key features that we can get when using Prezi. Here is the Prezi feature summary.

I will discuss 6 main features of Prezi.

1. Importing PowerPoint slides

As a student myself, i am used to PowerPoint more than Prezi. This is why Prezi allows their user to import PowerPoint slides into a presentation. When users import PowerPoint slides into Prezi, users can import the slides into layout and adjust the movement from frame to frame. This feature is perfect for those who's already comfortable with PowerPoint (like me) and want to bring up their presentation into a whole new level.

2. Presenter view

Prezi offers a way to help presenters during in-person presentation. Presenter view includes a timer and a clock as ways to keep presenters on time while the audience will only see the presentation interface. Prezi also allows what frame will come next so presenters can manage their time while they do their presentation. This feature will ensure the presentation is going smoothly.

3. Embedding video

Just like PowerPoint, Prezi also allows users to import video from their files or from YouTube into their Prezi presentation. However, on other platforms, user need to click "Play" button then the video will start. But with Prezi, the video will start immediately when users move to that frame and will stop when they move to another frame.

4. Adding sound and narration

This feature will make presentation more engaging with the audiences. Users can record audio in another program and add sound to Prezi. One way to add sound is through a background track, which will play continuously throughout the presentation. Users can also add a designated sound for certain frames only, in which different sound for different frame. In my opinion, i don't like to add sound to my presentation as it can be a distraction.

5. Better collaboration

Prezi provides a number of ways to effectively present as a group. Multiple users (up to 10 users for Prezi) can work on the same presentation at once. The collaboration sidebar will users who is working on the presentation. Users can even use Prezi for remote presentations and pass the voice controls from person to person with the "hand over presentation" feature.

6. Prezi for iPhone and iPad

Do you know that Prezi can be downloaded on your iPhone and iPad for FREE? Users can view their presentation, make adjustment and show to others by only using their phone. Prezi presentations are always in synced in the Prezi cloud, in which users will always have an updated version of their presentations.

  • Benefit of Prezi in teaching.
Prezi can be use by both teachers and students. The most obvious advantage is it's novelty. Instead presenting content one slide at a time, Prezi let you to zoom out to see the bigger picture and zoom in to examine supporting details. The zooming, twisting and panning movement can make Prezi much more exciting than PowerPoint which students will give much more attention . It can convey meaning in an engaging and memorable way. The zooming is also useful from teaching perspective. Teachers can have a little explanations for example associated with key words in a passage, and student can zoom into if they need further assistance.

The structure of Prezi is similar to mind map. Teachers can still set an order and progress from one point to another and it is flexible for teachers to navigate Prezi in a manner they choose. Prezi is also whiteboard friendly. The presentation was designed with iPad in mind, touch navigation is way easier with Prezi which allows teacher to create exciting and interactive presentations that the students can really get involved in.

  • Benefit of Prezi in learning.
Educational research indicating that graphic organizers aid in learning. Via Prezi, students can create presentations in a nonlinear manner by creating different paths through which presentation can travel. Prezi is the best way to shape student's ideas that comes to their mind. Prezi help students to organize student's thoughts.

As a student in UiTM, we are require to make presentation in every semester. I love using PowerPoint instead of Prezi because of it's simplicity. But if i need a twist of creativity in my presentation, i will choose Prezi over PowerPoint. It is more engaging with audiences and can give more understanding to them.
